A long time ago there was a revolution in books. Gutenberg, that’s what people say his name was, defeated the evil sorcerers who kept books from the common people and spread them freely.
It triggered a great many things, most of them good. Of course, it also led to the spread of dangerous ideas like sparkly vampires and naughty naughty billionaires. However, for the most part, it led to good things and even some great things.
Today, we are in the midst of a similar revolution. Again, the number of people with access to books is set to quadruple. The amount of books people can access will quadruple too. Perhaps most importantly, every one gets to write the book they have always wanted to write and share their story. They will get to have it read by other people without someone in an ivory tower deciding if their story and their words are ‘good enough’.
If Freedom of Speech is an inalienable right, then perhaps Freedom to Write your Book and Freedom for your Book to Be Read should be inalienable rights too.
We are blessed to be foot soldiers in the 2nd great revolution of Books and Reading. Let’s make the most of it.
